Ocean Park Classic Car Night #12

A clean 1968 Maserati was one of the highlights of this month's Ocean Park Classic Car Night. Held on the third Tuesday of each month at the California Heritage Museum by the Ocean Park Car Club, it's a great way to spend a hot summer evening, not only are there the classic cars, but a group a food trucks are there cooking up all types of food. Even surf & skate legends such as Jeff Ho can be spotted hanging out, and chowing down on some tasty food while admiring the classic cars. Some of the other vehicles that cruised in were a '55 Nomad, a '34 Ford, a first generation Camaro, and the Hecho en Venice Landcruiser.

This is just some of the photos taken at Night #12, there are many more. Visit the Night #12 section of the Ocean Park Classic Car Night Gallery to see more.

11 year old wheelchair athlete Jaylee Dutcher drops into the bowl for the first time at the Venice Skate Park, during the Life Rolls On They Will Skate Again event. With some encouraging words from her idol, Nitro Circus star Aaron Wheelz Fotheringham, and her father standing by below, she successfully overcomes that fear of dropping into a bowl for the first time.

Video: Lifeguard Attacked At Venice Pier

Lifeguard whose attack by three people in Venice was captured on video had simply asked his assailants to stop smoking on the pier, one of the lifeguard’s supervisors said Friday.

The full-time lifeguard, who has been with the department for 10 years, was jumped by two men and a woman as soon as he hopped off the ladder at his tower at the Venice Pier on Thursday evening, authorities said.

The LAPD identified the two men as Harutiun Balyan, 30, and Ara Sarkisyan, 28. The woman was identified as Arusiak Gekchyan, 28. All three were arrested on suspicion of battery on an executive officer, a felony. They have been freed on bail, LAPD officials said.

The video shows two men swinging wildly at the lifeguard the moment he was off the ladder. Haskett said the lifeguard got down from the tower so he could have a clear conversation with the group. There’s a no smoking sign when you walk on the pier and lifeguards routinely ask people to not break the rules, Haskett said.

But only law enforcement can cite someone so lifeguards can act only as witnesses to a violation, he added.

At one point in the video, the lifeguard stands up and exchanges blows with one of the men while a bystander moves in and confronts the second attacker.

Video shows the woman kicking at the lifeguard’s head when he was on the ground trying to get up. She was also making false claims of sexual harassment.

Two other lifeguards eventually showed up and broke up the fight, video showed.

A recording of the fight’s aftermath showed one of the three fight suspects breathing heavily, lying on his back, his face covered in blood.

The confrontation occurred about 7:15 p.m., the LAPD said. The three people seen fighting the lifeguard were arrested on suspicion of felony assault, according to KTLA.

The lifeguard drove himself to the hospital after the fight – he is waiting for results to learn if he broke his hand, Haskett said. One of the lifeguard’s alleged attackers was also taken to the hospital for medical treatment, police said.

LRO Wheelchair Rail Jam

Once again there was a Rail Jam at the end of Life Rolls On's They Will Skate Again event. But unlike last year's Rail Jam, which was an spur-of-the-moment session on one of the sketchiest makeshift ramps ever, this year a real ramp was brought out and it was made an official mini contest in the They Will Skate Again schedule of events for the day.

The contest was held in the standard jam format, where all the competitors just went when the wanted as many times as they felt like, and at the end, the judges would pick who had the best overall hits on the rail.

Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham's 180 over the rail was the trick that basically crowned him the contest's champ.

A ton more photos in the Rail Jam Photo Gallery.

Currently editing the video footage of the Rail Jam, it will be online soon, subscribe to our YouTube channel to get updated on when it goes live. Last year's Rail Jam Video is on our channel.

They Will Skate Again

The Life Rolls On Foundation held their annual They Will Skate Again event this past weekend at the Venice Skate Park. Just like their They Will Surf Again events, They Will Skate Again is a free event where individuals with varied levels of mobility can participate in clinics to help them learn the sport. Top wheelchair-motocross athletes, like Nitro Circus' Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham, were on hand to coach kids of all ages on how to safely ride the skate park.

Just like last year, there was a Rail Jam towards the end of the day. More on the Rail Jam in the next blog post.

Closing the event was the awards ceremony. Plaques were given out to the stand out participants.
